FAQ's
Does DMSO have to be stored in glass bottles?
There is some misconception that DMSO has to be stored in glass containers. However, HDPE (high-density polyethylene) is suitable for the long-term storage of DMSO and it is packed and shipped in this by the manufacturers. Other plastics contain plastizer, which if left in contact with DMSO will slowly leach into the solution therefore not recommended.
Why has my pure liquid DMSO crystallized?
Neat DMSO has a melting point of 18.5°C. This means that on cold days it can freeze solid. This is also a useful indication of purity chemical. If DMSO is diluted with water roughly the freezing point degrees (ie watermixtures remain liquid even if cooled to -10°C).
Why does my breath smell of sulphur when using DMSO?
DMSO when applied topically, readily passes through the skin. It is then metabolised by the liver in the body and converted to DMS (dimethyl sulphide) which has a strong ‘garlic’ like odour. DMS is used as flavourant in the food industry.
If I am using DMSO topically does it need to be diluted?
Pure DMSO is normally diluted 1part DMSO to 1part distilled water. This is to minimise any skin irritation or mild burning sensation often associated with the topical use of DMSO. It should be diluted more for sensitive areas.
How long does pure DMSO last? does it have a sell by date?
Pure DMSO is chemically stable and does not have a sell by date. It can last for years.
What is difference between Asian and US manufactured DMSO?
US DMSO manufactured to a very high level of purity, (Generally above 99.98% by Gas Chromatography) and checked by rigorous chemical tests to ascertain low level metal ions presence. Asian equivalent DMSO have good chemical purity but control standards are sometimes not strictly adhered to. There is concern about possible contamination with Asian manufactured DMSO.
What precautions should I follow for topical use?
DMSO is readily absorbed through the skin. Therefore apply to CLEAN skin, as any impurity on skin surface will also be absorbed through the skin when DMSO is applied.
